Armed Forces Day was established on August 31, 1949 by then-Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson to replace the separate Army, Navy, and Air Force days. The event grew out of the unification of the armed forces under a single Department of Defense by then-President Harry S. Truman when he signed the National Security Act on July 26, 1947. In 1999

, the late Senator John McCain introduced official legislation to designate the month of May as National Military Appreciation Month. The Senate and House of Representatives have passed resolutions calling on Americans to recognize and honor U.S. service members under NMAM.

Jill and I have personally experienced the anxious pride that parents feel when they see their child in uniform. We have marveled at the dedication of military families and their resilience to uproot their lives of a few years and relocate to new communities.
